Math

I did some math today.  There are 39 more days until 12/31/14 (counting today), and I want to reach 80000 words in the WIP, so I need to add about 230 words each day.  Assuming I work every day.

Which I probably won’t.  So if I give myself 9 days off (more than reasonable with Thanksgiving and Christmas happening in the next 39 days), I have to add 300 words/day I work.

Doable?  Yes.

However, tonight I only did about 68.

But at least I did something!  I got through several more scenes and cleaned them up.  I need to get back to the new scenes in order to really up the word count, but I need to lay the foundation for them in these edits.

For now I’m off to bed so I can get up early tomorrow and work.

Celebrate with me

Whew!  Had a fantastic day today!

I met a friend for writing time and set a goal to get at least a net change of 800 new words and I did it!

I know you’re probably thinking 800 words?  That’s all?  But that’s an overall increase of 800 words to the ms during revision.  It includes all the words I took out.  Which I didn’t count, because that would probably depress me.

Instead I’m thrilled that I set a goal and reached it!

Quick check-in

I did get up early to write today.  So, yay me!

Almost finished the scene I was working on and plugged it back into the ms.  The word count overall decreased by about 150, but again, they are better words and I’m happy with it.  Plus I have a good starting place tomorrow, or later today if I get time.

Confession

Confession time.  I slept in this morning.  I snoozed once, then re-set the alarm and didn’t get up to write.

I did, however, make time to write this evening and have left myself in a very good place for tomorrow morning.  I added 317 words in  30 minutes and have a great jumping-off point for tomorrow.

I also made plans to write on Saturday, hopefully with a couple of other people so that it actually happens and I make progress.  Instead of just catching up on some much-needed sleep.

It’s been quite a week and I haven’t even started thinking about how I’m going to fit writing time in next week when we celebrate Thanksgiving.

I’ll have to worry about that later, though.  For now I’m headed to bed so I can be ready for the morning.

Second rate

I was so excited when I logged into the website tonight.  I had my first  comment!  I quickly jumped over to the comments page and … disappointment flooded me.

It was from my friend Jessica (she even signed it “Your friend, Jessica” so I would know) telling me how she can help me get into Google’s 1st page for searches.

No, thanks.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.  Which is actually coming before the work is done tonight…because it’s about the fact that it’s almost 11:00 PM and I haven’t written yet today.  We’ve had visitors at work all week so I’ve had to go in early and stay late, so getting up even earlier to write hasn’t been a priority.

But it needs to be.  Regardless of what’s going on in the day job, I need to make my writing time a priority.  Otherwise, who will?

I’m going to eek out my 100 words (minimum) tonight, then make quality time tomorrow – which means getting up early and writing for an hour.

No more second-rate schedule for this book.  Get it done in my prime writing time.

Yes, ma’am.

Learning my schedule

Evidently I can’t write on Fridays.  And for the past two weeks, not on Saturdays, either.  This week, I also skipped Sunday.  Ugh.

I should be spending as much time as I can on the weekends writing – those are my only large blocks of time, but they are also the days that so many other activities are scheduled.  The past two Saturdays have been leave the house at 8 (or earlier!) and don’t get home (or done) until at least 9 or later.  Which means that after a full work week, a Friday night football game (because I DO live in Texas!), and a jam-packed Saturday, by the time Sunday rolls around, I’m mentally and physically exhausted.  Last week I was able to get a couple of hours in.  This week I read.  And napped.  Then read some more.  I needed it.

But I also need to finish this book.  So, I slept in this morning (getting up at 6 instead of 5), went to work, got a haircut, then went to my local chapter RWA meeting, and just now got my work in for today.  I worked from about 10:30 to 11:00 and had a net change of about 175 words as I edited a scene.  Not bad.  Not great, but at least I got it done.

Getting up early tomorrow.  I am re-stating my goal of finishing revisions by 12/31 and querying in January.  I set a goal the meeting tonight to have the ms done and at least one query out the door by our January meeting (1/20/15).

OMG.  2015.

A message from the universe

You know how sometimes you read or hear the same message everywhere?  It’s like the universe is trying to tell you something.

The message I’ve been getting — and am finally understanding — is that because I have a full-time job, in my spare time I can either write, keep my house clean, or exercise.  But I can’t do all three.

Lately I’ve been choosing to write.

This weekend, when I’m not trying to squeeze in 8 hours of work, plus an hour commute, plus some family time and some writing, I might clean my house.

Might.

Happy Hump Day!

Hope your week is going well!  After a very busy weekend, this week has been quite productive.  I got up at 5 on Monday and Tuesday, and at 6 today.  Tomorrow I’ll have to go back to 5 since I have to leave the house at 7 for work.  I need to head to bed soon, but wanted to get in a report tonight.

By the way, in case you’re checking things like this, the time on this site is whacked.  It’s saying it’s 3:00 AM as I write this, but it’s 9:00 PM in my world.  I haven’t figured out how to fix that yet.  In fact, since I got the site up, I haven’t spent much time fiddling with it.  I’ve been writing instead, and I’m happy with the trade-off.

Today, with just under a 1/2 hour this morning and about 45 minutes at lunch, I managed to add 600 words to my manuscript.  This included a scene revision, so I’m a happy camper.  I’m definitely seeing a benefit from the daily work.

Off to bed so I can get busy bright and early tomorrow morning.

Progress

I didn’t post last night, but I did write yesterday.  I added about 300 words while working yesterday morning, at lunch, and a little bit last night.

This morning I worked about an hour and added 333 words to the ms.  Super excited about this progress.

Being in the book (almost) everyday sure does help keep the words flowing.  I have a few more scenes to add, but I’m also checking flow and arcs.  I’m really learning revision with this one, and I feel good about it.  It’s hard, but the next one should be easier.

Right?

I sure hope so!
